AFTER THE COLLISION | 2020-2021

Medium: Arylic, Yarn, Nails on Canvas & Wood | Location: Portland, Oregon

After The Collision is a series of mixed media pieces with underlying themes of creation, order, and chaos. Unlike my previous work that utilized words and portrayals of self, these pieces are abstract, focusing on developing a visual language that centers around patterns and colors. Utilizing yarn, I laid out patterns that are arranged taut on nails over varied colorful backgrounds. Some of the latter pieces have paint thrown onto the canvas after the yarn was already laid. When I began this series, the backgrounds were painted with brushes; by the end, I was painting and throwing with my hands and body. There is a juxtaposition between the straight geometric lines that are strung tightly on nails and the amorphous quality of the backgrounds. While creating the pieces, I was often thinking about relationships that are woven between people, places, and events. In the circular pieces, I thought of Planets or Stars in the Universe in their moments of becoming and in transformation.
